Daydream - Artist Statement

This project was a fun (and challenging) one. I personally am much more confident in my cinematography skills than I am in my animation skills, so that part of this project felt very natural to me. This makes sense considering the fact that I have spent nearly zero time on any sort of animation projects (with the exception of a couple unfinished animations). With that being said, I am satisfied with the outcome of this project! I knew going into it that I wanted to use a couple sweet voicemails that I have received from my family over the last year, and I wanted to overlay my animation over a video. I also knew that I wanted to have an interesting color palette in my video. In order to achieve this, I went to the Cage (in ATLAS) and rented out some of the colored lights. With these, I played around with my set up until I was satisfied. Then, I sat in front of a mirror and filmed a very basic video of me getting ready and inspecting myself. The contrast of colors in this film is meant to showcase two sides of your mental health, and the animation also assists this. I found the animation process satisfying when I finally found a groove, and then I just played around with different brushes and concepts! I wanted the animation to be simple yet effective, and it is safe to say that it was a learning curve. As for the audio, I had envisioned a repetitive clock ticking to trail throughout the video. If I had had a bit more time, I would have liked to play with the audio more. However, I still enjoy the final. Overall, I had a lot of fun completing this project and I think the end product is one that deserves being proud of!
